12 Thoughts on “The Coconut Oil Miracle – Book Review”

  • For a few years now I have seen a lot about coconut oil. I know it has become a lot easier to locate in the stores than it use to be, so I do not complain. I have always used it as a carrier to mix lotions, shampoo, soaps and other natural homemade body care products. I think it is time to pick up a book and get to know a bit more about this! I have used it on occasion to cook but I know very little about it nutritionally. Does it replace all the oil you currently use at home? I know it has a bit of a flavor that is good for somethings maybe not for others? How does it hold up in higher heat? I love my extra virgin olive oil, may have a hard time giving that up completely!

    • Hello Christina,

I use both coconut oil and extra virgin olive oil when cooking, and I have stopped using any other oils since I read this book. In many other books within the health field, the benefits of the coconut oil have been confirmed. Extra virgin olive oil is also extremely healthy and therefore I still use it. I don´t really taste the coconut flavour of fried food or oven baked food, but I suppose gourmets do taste the difference.
The coconut oil holds up very well in higher heat. The smoke point (burning point) of unrefined virgin coconut oil is about 350 degrees, and 400 for refined coconut oil. Extra virgin olive oil has got a smoke point of 325 to 375, depending on which quality. So you see, there is not much difference between these two oils. They are both healthy to use for cooking.
Christina, you don´t have to give up olive oil, but I recommend you to use coconut oil as well.
Looking forward to hearing from you again. I´d love to know about your coconut cooking experiences.

  • Great book review, You know I have been thinking about eating more coconuts in my diet because I like the taste. I’m not sure where they get the oil from but there you go again it is natural and natural is what we want, especially in the oil. You mentioned taken olive oil which is another very healthy oil that I’m starting to put in my diet also. I will have to look into the coconut oil recipes.

    • Thank you so much, Fred, for commenting on my book review!
Oh yes, I think coconut oil taste delicious. The coconut oil comes from the flesh of the coconut, that´s the kernel of the coconut. I recommend choosing the unrefined coconut oil, which is also named extra virgin. The cold pressed method better preserves the nutrients of the oil.
There are many healthy oils, but coconut oil and olive oil are the healthiest ones. One of the many great benefits is that they don´t get rancid as fast compared to other oils. Oils that have gotten rancid are very bad for our body and must be avoided.
Enjoy the delicious taste of coconut,

  • WOW — I had no idea that coconut oil provided so many healthy benefits! I stayed away from it, thinking that it was not great to use, but I see that I was so wrong! Coconut oil can help lose weight? Sign me up! I would love to learn more about the uses of coconut oil and will be ordering this book. Wondering if it can be used in place of olive oil in a stir fry? Would it change the flavor? Thanks!

    • Hello Amy,
That´s exactly what I thought myself before I read this book – I didn´t know of all the benefits of coconut oil and avoided it. Coconut can help you to lose weight by making you feel full and satisfied. You don´t get cravings that easy any more when adding it to your diet and the body can use it better for energy than other oils.
Yes, you can absolutely use coconut oil for frying food. I mostly use coconut oil when frying in a pan or for oven-baked food. The smoke point (burning point) of unrefined virgin coconut oil is about 350 degrees. It is pretty much the same as for extra virgin olive oil. I don´t mind the coconut flavour at all, it is not very strong. There are special coconut oils for cooking if you prefer not having the flavour in your food.
      Enjoy the magic of coconuts,

  • Hello
After reading your post on coconut oil I realized I have been blessed, I also only use coconut oil and olive oil simply because of health reasons I am forced to use these two oils and no others. I think everyone should try coconut oil for a period and see how it affects them, I do find it much easier to maintain my weight and my digestive issues are much less severe. You might find this will even help acid reflux which so many people experience today, I recommend everyone give coconut oil a try or at least purchase this book and check it out for themselves
